Bayswater-Morley prepared themselves for the WACA first-grade pennant finals series with an emphatic win over Midland-Guildford at Hillcrest Reserve on Saturday.  Winning the toss and batting on the first day, the Bears did not cope well with the bowler-friendly track and were dismissed for a mediocre total of 168 shortly after tea.  Only Ryan Phillimore, who opened the batting, made any real impression with a solid 48 in his two hours at the crease.  However, the game was left evenly poised with the visitors losing three wickets for 58 at the close of play with the dangerous Peter Worthington unbeaten on 29.

Upon the resumption, Midland took their score to 78 before losing Worthington for 40, but thereafter crumbled under the relentless pressure applied by left-arm tearaway Mathew Inness who devastated the visitors with a brilliant spell which netted him the remarkable figures of 8-48 from 21 overs.  Inness, who played a number of games for the Warriors earlier in the season, recorded his best performance since arriving from Victoria.

Midland were dismissed for a paltry 120 with a special mention for young Royce Blight who bravely crafted 51 before running out of partners.  The remainder of the day was utilised by Bayswater as valuable second innings batting practice when they reached 8-180 at the close with Chris Hall scoring 50 and Michael Thistle notching another half-century with 64.

The meritorious win enabled the Bears to conclude the preliminary rounds unbeaten in the 2006 calendar year and has propelled them into third place on the table after being eleventh earlier in the season.  Next weekend Bayswater host fourth-placed
South Perth in an elimination final at Hillcrest with the bonus of captain Marcus North returning from state duty. South Perth will regain the services of fellow Western Warriors Chris Rogers and Ben Edmondson.

The Bear's third and fourth grades have also qualified for the finals series.
