Bayswater-Morley began the WACA Pennant first-grade cricket season in fine style by defeating Perth at Hillcrest Reserve on the weekend.  Choosing to bat first on Saturday morning, the visitors were soon in trouble, losing two quick wickets, including that of Western Warrior Luke Ronchi for a duck, inside the fifth over.  The situation worsened to 6/49 after 37 overs and the lower order did well to progress the score to 102 before being dismissed.

Only Aaron Heal [28] and skipper Paul Keenan [29] made any impression. All of the Bayswater bowlers showed a high degree of accuracy and aggression, especially Mat Inness [3/14 from 12 overs] and left-arm seamer Ryan Phillimore who returned a career best performance of 6/20 from 11.1 overs.

By mid-afternoon the Bears were batting and not faring much better until, with the score at 2/11, skipper Marcus North rescued the situation with a fine little cameo of 43 from 44 balls, including seven boundaries. Kim Lawrence [31] and Ryan Phillimore [28] continued the consolidation, and with three others in the lower order reaching double figures, Bayswater reached 168 to take first-innings points.

Perth batted a second time on Sunday to stave off the risk of outright defeat and managed to reach 9/163 at the close.  Ronchi again fell cheaply [7] and Inness took a further two wickets.

In the second-grade match, former first-grade opening batsman Justin Cantrill remarkably made 99 in a losing team total of 121. The third and fourth grades also lost their matches, but both the under 15 and under 17 teams posted first round wins.

The first-grade travel to James Oval on Saturday to take on University.
