Bayswater-Morley find themselves in a vulnerable position after the first day of their WACA First-Grade pennant match against University at James Oval on Saturday.  University won the toss and elected to bat first on what is traditionally a batsman-friendly track, but found early trouble from a spirited Bears attack, and were tottering at 4-56 at the close of the pre-lunch session.  Western Warrior Mathew Inness struck twice early, and Kim Lawrence and Joe Barnes took a wicket apiece.

However, the afternoon session saw an 88 run partnership between former Wanneroo opener Craig King [69]and English import Steve Sellwood [43] which turned the innings around and set things up for the lower order.  King has a Western Warrior rookie contract and ironically came close to signing with Bayswater in the off-season.

In the final session Jim Cameron [49], Josh Mangan [40], and the unbeaten pair of Paul St.Quintin [25no]and Alan Penter [17no] took the home team to a formidable total of 8-283 at stumps. Mangan is also a Warrior rookie and came to WA as a leg-spinner to further his First-Class career prospects.

All of the bowlers strived admirably with Inness taking 2/47, Barnes 3/60, and Ryan Phillimore 1/26 from 16 tight overs.  University may consider batting on for a short time next week to set Bayswater an imposing target and the Bears will be hoping that Marcus North will be available to assist in the chase.

In the lower grades and juniors the Bears fared consistently well.  Second-Grade dismissed University for 251 and are 0/5 in reply, while Third-Grade was highlighted by a fine 126 from veteran skipper Andre Burress in their innings of 249.  Fourth-Grade are 3/57 in reply to a modest University total of 135.  Both the Under 15 and Under 17 teams are in almost certain winning positions.
