After winning the first three games of the WACA First-Grade pennant season, Bayswater-Morley suffered losses in the two rounds completed at the weekend.  On Saturday at Hillcrest the Bears resumed the second day of the match with Gosnells defending the mediocre score of 226 but with the advantage of snaring two wickets for no runs in the last over of the first day.

After grassing a couple of simple catches during the first half-hour, it became apparent the total would be difficult to defend.  Indeed, Mark Watkins and Luke Pomersbach put Gosnells in the box seat with a partnership of 111 before Watkins fell for 45.  With the positive support of Mitchell Stokes [24] and Justin Gauder [18] in the lower order, Pomersbach proved to be the match-winner for the visitors.  Although he gave a simple chance when on 99 ,the 22 year-old Warriors rookie left-hander went on to graft a fine 122 to ensure victory for his side by just one run before the rain arrived to conclude proceedings.

Once again Mathew Inness was Bayswater's most effective bowler with 4-57 from his 24 overs, with Brendan Mills [2-32], and Kim Lawrence [1-58] being the only other wicket-takers.

On Sunday the Bears visited Floreat Oval to face Subiaco-Floreat in a one day game which constituted the fifth round of the pennant fixtures.  Bayswater batted first and were soon in trouble, losing both openers and skipper Marcus North with only 38 runs on the board.  While Rhys May [22], Ryan Phillimore [28], and Brendan Mills [21] each got starts but failed to go on, only Nicholas Pishos impressed with a swashbuckling 44 from 49 balls.  Bayswater managed only a fragile 180 from their allotted 50 overs and the more even Subiaco batting performance took them to a deserved victory by five runs.

The win was underpinned by a man-of-the-match effort from all-rounder David Bolton who top-scored with 38 after taking 4-29 during the Bayswater innings.  The Bears attack was severely depleted by the pre-match loss to injury of Joe Barnes and Michael Thistle and their depth will be tested when they meet high-flying Claremont-Nedlands at Hillcrest next Saturday.
