Bayswater-Morley are in danger of losing their third consecutive WACA first-grade pennant match after the first day of the clash with reigning premier Claremont-Nedlands. Being sent in on a Hillcrest wicket which was under prepared because of late week rain and with the ball seaming and swinging prodigiously, the Bears batting was devastated by the brilliant performance of Western Warriors contracted quick Tim McDonald who finished with a career best 8-31 including a hat-trick. Apart from acting skipper Ryan Phillimore, who grafted an admirable 44 in his two hour stay at the crease, the hapless Bayswater batsmen were powerless to withstand the relentless pressure applied by McDonald. Nick Pishos, Rob Peach, and Michael Thistle went without scoring in consecutive balls, two without playing a shot. Jamie Roberts provided fine support by picking up the other two wickets for 38 from his 14 overs. Matthew Birrell [18] and Kim Lawrence [15] both got starts but were unable to build an innings while the Bears were dismissed for a measly 96 in the 47th over. In reply the Claremont openers put on 40 before Jim Allenby fell to Michael Thistle for 28. Thistle struck again to remove Campbell Robertson for 6. Late wickets to Mathew Innes and Kim Lawrence gave Bayswater some heart, but at the close Claremont were in plain sight of first-innings points at 4-81.Notable performances in the Bayswater lower grades were a five wickets haul by Grant Thistle in the seconds, and the second century if the season from third-grade captain Andre Burress.
