Bayswater-Morley is poised for victory after the first day of their WACA first-grade pennant match against Mount Lawley at Breckler Park on Saturday.  The home team batted first on a slowish track and after the early loss of opener Tom Meredith for 1, established a solid partnership of 79 for the second wicket between Shane Rakich [44] and Julian Goodall [43] to set the stage for a solid total.

When those two departed, Dean Brownlie went without scoring, but skipper Mark Sanders and veteran David Lindsay put on a further 49 to bring the tally to 5/147 before a collapse saw the last five wickets fall for the addition of only 58 runs.  The Mount Lawley innings ended at 205 in the sixty-fifth over with Lindsay being the mainstay of the lower order, top-scoring with 62.  Bayswater skipper Joe Barnes, who was returning from injury, encouraged effort and discipline from his bowlers, the best of which were Mathew Inness who took 3/37 from 17 overs and Kim Lawrence [3/52] in a welcome return to wicket-taking form.

Inness in particular was impressive, following on from his good performances in the Western Warrior second eleven match against Victoria earlier in the week when he captured five wickets and scored 67 from 64 balls with the bat.  Ryan Phillimore bagged 2/23, while Barnes and Michael Thistle took one each to round out a fine all round attack.  Also notable was the performance of teenager Cameron Robb who gloved four catches behind the stumps in his first-grade wicket keeping debut.

For the remaining 16 overs of the day, Bears opening pair Chris Hall and Matthew Birrell safely worked their way to 44 without loss.  Hall will resume on 21, while Birrell is unbeaten on 14.  The result of this match may be crucial to Bayswater who are trying to arrest a slump and keep their diminishing hopes of a final six position alive
