Bayswater-Morley notched their fourth win of the season in a tense finish against local derby rivals Mount Lawley in the seventh round of WACA first-grade cricket at Breckler Park on Saturday.  The Bears resumed at 0/44 in pursuit of the Hawks modest first innings total of 205 and took the opening partnership to 57 before Matt Birrell fell for 18.

Solid top order performances from Chris Hall [36], Rhys May [36], and Ryan Phillimore [40], enabled Bayswater to cruise to 5-174 and victory seemed inevitable.  However, a dramatic collapse which saw 4 wickets fall for the addition of only 23 runs brought the last batsman, Shannon Weston, to the crease to join skipper Joe Barnes with still nine runs needed.  Weston, more noted for his right-arm leg spin than for his batting prowess, then proceeded to occupy the crease for 36 minutes and faced 27 balls without scoring a run while his captain grafted the required runs.

The innings finished at 214 and the win ensured Bayswater-Morley retained the Higgins Cup, which is the perpetual trophy these two clubs contest each season.  The remaining twenty-nine overs of the match were used by Mount Lawley as valuable batting practice while scoring 2/130 with Phil Walshaw making 74.

The Bears now return home to Hillcrest Reserve for the next two matches, playing Wanneroo next Saturday and Willetton in the last game of the calendar year.  Wins in each of these games will ensure Bayswater a position in the vital top six.
