Bayswater-Morley posted a convincing win against visiting Wanneroo in the eighth round of WACA first-grade pennant at Hillcrest Reserve on Saturday. The limited overs one-dayer also served as the second round of Sunday League fixtures.
The Bears won the toss, batted first, and mangaged only a modest total of 8/208 in their allotted 50 overs. Although seven of the nine batsmen used reached double figures, it was only when all-rounders Kim Lawrence and Michael Thistle came together with the score at a precarious 5/87 that the innings developed some substance. The partnership added 75 valuable runs before the dominant Thistle fell for a power packed half-century, compiled from only 51 balls and including four fours and three sixes.
Lawrence [38] and teenage wicketkeeper Cameron Robb [18] then eased the total close to 200 to give the bowlers something to defend. Earlier Matt Birrell [21], and Rhys May with 24 from 19 balls, had made solid contributions. Chris Quelch with 2/45 from his 10 overs and Chris Warren [2/12 from six] proved to be the most successful of the Wanneroo bowlers.
The Bayswater total proved to be more than insurmountable for the Roos batting line-up which summarily collapsed under pressure to be all out for only 117 in 30.2 overs. Token resistance was provided by Vin Clarke [10], Gary Dixon [20], and skipper Joel Charles [19], until tail-ender Gordon Cameron belted an unbeaten 34 from only 24 balls to enable the total to reach three figures.
The Bears fielding was particularly sharp and featured three run-outs, two involving May and the other a direct hit by Chris Hall. The best of the Bayswater bowlers was again Western Warrior Mathew Innes with 3/35 from his ten overs, while Thistle and Joe Barnes bagged two apiece. Inness also took two fine catches. The win is the second consecutive for the Bears, who have now regathered enough momentum to face Willetton with some confidence at Hillcrest over the next two Saturdays.
