At the end of the first day of the WACA first-grade pennant match against Melville at Hillcrest Reserve, Bayswater-Morley managed to post a solid total of 8/276. The Bears were sent in to bat by Melville on what appeared to be a greenish track but which proved to be no kinder to ball than bat.
The day was a classic illustration of the fickleness of cricket when, after an opening partnership of 111 between veteran Chris Hall and new recruit Robbie Morgan finally ended midway through the afternoon session, four wickets fell for the addition of only four runs. Both Hall and Morgan scored half-centuries but they both fell with the score on 111 and were quickly followed by Rhys May, who failed to score, and skipper Marcus North [4] before going to tea at a precarious 5/139. But the final session was dominated by another century stand between a reborn Brendan Mills [43] and all-rounder Michael Thistle who scored a swashbuckling 70 from only 79 balls featuring 7 fours and 2 sixes. Rob Peach and Mathew Inness then closed out the day both undefeated on 26 and 6 respectively. Bayswater Head Coach David Baird may well be pleased with the new found consistency of Mills, who has scores of 68, 38, and 43 in his last three digs, and Morgan, who has recorded half-centuries in his only two innings in the Bears colours since arriving from Claremont-Nedlands. These performances added to fifties from Hall and Ryan Phillimore in recent weeks augurs well for the Bears campaign for a final six position.
The most successful of the Melville bowlers was medium-pacer Drew Porter who took 3/48 from his 18 overs. Bayswater have the option to bat on next week but it is crucial they allow sufficient time to bowl out the visitors to gain the vital first innings points needed to keep them in the finals race.
