Bayswater-Morley recorded its most important win of the WACA First-Grade pennant season in defeating Melville by a decisive 124 runs at Hillcrest Reserve on Saturday.  Having slipped to eighth position on the table and with their season on the line, the Bears were desperate to beat the visitors who were sitting comfortably in fifth spot.

At stumps on the first day Bayswater had reached 8/276 and took the risk of batting on for the first fifteen minutes of day two during which time 4 overs were bowled and a further 25 runs were scored. The declaration came at the tactically imposing total at 9/301.  Melville set about the task of chasing the target with care and sat at 1/51 at the lunch break.

The afternoon session was slightly in favour of Melville as they added a further 103 runs with loss of only three wickets.  The match was very much in the balance and at that point Bears skipper Joe Barnes may have been ruing the loss of 25 minutes and 7 overs usurped by batting on in the early session.  But at exactly 4.45 Western Warrior left-arm speedster Mathew Inness, who had to that point taken only one wicket, was thrown the ball to begin his third spell of the innings.  In an awesome display of aggression and control Inness destroyed his opposition by taking the last six wickets at a cost of only six runs in a devastating burst of 8.3 overs.

The Melville collapse saw them summarily dismissed for 177 at 5.33.  Inness finished with the figures of 7/49 and although he took eight in an innings last season, this was certainly his best match-winning performance in his two year tenure with Bayswater since arriving from Victoria. He now has taken an impressive 33 wickets for the season at a cost of 14.96 each.

Ben Lillis [36], Drew Porter [40], Shawn Gillies [30], and Scott Meuleman [27] all got starts for Melville but were unable to withstand the pressure applied by the Bears attack.  The win has kept alive Bayswater's challenge for a spot in the finals and the run home begins with a crucial one-day clash with high-flying Scarborough at Abbett Park next Saturday
