Bayswater-Morley have captured the WACA Under-Seventeen premiership by defeating Joondalup at Richardson Park at the weekend. Joondalup, the minor premiers, batted first and were soon in trouble when they lost four wickets for only 32, but battled admirably to recover the situation before being dismissed for a respectable 186. Vinay Chavda [2-22] and Dan Puren [2-21] were the most productive of a evenly potent Bears attack.
But any confidence that Joondalup may have gained was quickly shattered by a powerful Bayswater batting performance which saw them cruise to the target with the loss of only two wickets with many overs to spare. Following his fine 135 in the semi-final, opening batting protege Aaron Todd once again was the star performer with an unbeaten 104. He was amply aided in the pursuit of the conclusive victory by Cameron Robb who scored a feisty 48. The win culminates a hat-trick of WACA Junior Premierships over the past three seasons, the previous two being back-to-back wins in the Under-Fifteen division. With most of the group being involved in all of these triumphs, they represent the most talented and successful batch of young players in the history of the Bayswater-Morley club. Todd, as an example, is already playing senior cricket and has scored a Second-Grade century, while Robb finished the season as the regular First-Grade wicketkeeper-batsman. Many others of the group should develop into quality First-Grade players with the club. It was announced last week that Robb was chosen as the WACA Media Award winner of the Under-Seventeen player of the year and Luke Waterhouse has been selected in the Australian Under-Fifteen squad to tour England in August as a result of his performances in the National Championships held recently in Canberra. Meanwhile, Wannerro has won the WACA Under-Fifteen flag by defeating Midland-Guildford in the final on Saturday.
