Bayswater-Morley tasted both victory and defeat in an eventful weekend of WACA first-grade pennant cricket at Hillcrest Reserve. On Saturday, visitors South Perth resumed at a vulnerable 5/42 in pursuit of the Bears modest first innings total of 164, and capitulated in orderly fashion to be dismissed for only 103. Michael Thistle, recapturing the form which saw him represent Western Australia a couple of seasons back, destroyed the top-order with the fine figures of 5/41 from 14 overs. Only Leif Powis with 28 and Chris Thompson [31] made any notable contribution.
Bayswater then batted a second time and, thanks to a determined 72 from opener Liam Davis, were able to declare at 5-140, setting a target of 202 in 33 overs for South to achieve an unlikely outright win. It was not to be, however, as they limped to 4-127 at the close and Bayswater had to remain content with the first innings points. The following day, a Sunday League match which served as Round 3 of the pennant competition, was played against visiting Melville. Sent in to bat, Bayswater managed a defendable 9-209 from their allotted 50 overs, due mainly to another half-century from Davis and solid contributions from Cameron Robb [30] and an unbeaten 44 from Chris Hall. Although Melville started the chase well with an opening partnership of 82 between Scott Meuleman and Luke Towers, the run rate was kept under control. The introduction of part-time leg-spinner James Morris, who had taken 3-14 the previous day, saw the dismissal of Meuleman for 44 and Ben Lillis for a duck, to give him the figures of 2-1 from his first seven deliveries. But the arrival of Tom Scollay to support Towers quickly changed the face of the game. Scollay, who smashed 96 from only 62 balls and Towers [82], were both particularly brutal on the hapless Morris who ultimately conceded 74 from 7 overs, allowing Melville to cruise to victory with 5-270 from their 50 overs.
