The fragility of the Bayswater-Morley batting was once again on display at Hillcrest Reserve on Saturday during the first day of the WACA first-grade pennant match against Subiaco-Floreat. With the first use of a track which seemed to have little more bounce and carry than usual, the Bears top order failed to flatter and they were progressively dismissed to be all out for 169 early in the evening session. Only Matthew Birrell, with a stolid 44 compiled over 113 minutes at the top of the order, could be said to have succeeded.
Rhys May [26], Cameron Robb [27], and captain for the day Michael Thistle [28], each failed to build innings after establishing themselves at the crease. Sixteen year-old debutant Aaron Todd showed understandable nervousness and made only four, while English import James Morris contributed only 3. Bayswater’s task was made no easier by the loss of Western Warriors Liam Davis and Mathew Inness to state duty in Adelaide. The Subiaco bowling was tight and earnest with the stand-out efforts coming from opener Glenn Stockden with 3-34 from 18 overs and spinners Chris Hansberry 3-28 and Tim Monteleone 2-25. The visitors batted for the last 23 overs of the day and managed to graft their way to 2-63 at the close with opener Monteleone making 34 and Alex Malcolm undefeated on 18. Both these teams are struggling at the lower end of the table and a win at this stage of the season is vital to both to keep their slim finals prospects alive
