Although Bayswater-Morley’s aspirations of a finals appearance in the WACA First-Grade pennant season have effectively disappeared, interest will be retained in the performances of a budding young group of teenage rookie players when given the opportunity to display their talent at the senior level. During the first day of the Round 9 clash with Perth at Fletcher Park on Saturday, the Bears batted on a good pitch, but in conditions which heavily favoured seam bowling. The Perth pace trio of Daniel Townend, James Benning, and veteran Paul Keenan created early havoc to the Bayswater top-order, having them on their Knees at 5-60 at lunch. But then a large group of interested onlookers were to witness the debut of sixteen year-old Philip Adams whose promise and potential are unlimited. After scoring centuries on consecutive days in Under 17 and Colts [Under 21] matches a couple of weeks ago, his promotion to senior ranks was inevitable. The young right-hander was a little uncertain at first, but once he got off the mark with a back-foot cover drive for three, his innings blossomed into one of authority and aplomb beyond his years. He stoked the ball with mature confidence to all parts of the field, and ultimately guided the Bayswater innings to a total of 155 and being the last man out for a fine 61 in the last over of the day.
Seventy five minutes was lost to rain in the afternoon session and only 67 overs were possible. Keenan [3-40, Townend [4-52], and Benning with 3-23 from 10 overs, all excelled, but the conditions were with them for the duration. The Bears total looks too modest to defend, despite the efforts of Adams, but the season remains full of interest and promise.
