Bayswater-Morley find themselves in a competitive position after the first day of the WACA First-Grade pennant match against Fremantle at Hillcrest Reserve on Saturday.  Invited to bat on a typical Hillcrest track, the Bears promptly lost two early wickets with only nine runs on the board, but a 43 run partnership between Andrew Levy and Chris Hall intervened before the loss of three more quick wickets to have the home side in deep bother at 5-76.  But then followed a stabilizing partnership of 71 between the in-form Brendan Mills, and acting captain Michael Thistle. Mills perished on 36, but when Thistle was the last man out for a fine leader’s 71, the score had reached an unlikely 193.

Thistle’s face-saving innings covered a little under two hours, came from only 89 balls, and included eight fours and one towering six.  With 24 overs remaining, Fremantle began the pursuit cautiously, but managed to lose three wickets for only 64 at the close.  Mike Thistle was once again the star, picking up two of those for 26 from ten penetrating overs, while younger brother Grant snared the other at a cost of only five runs.

The match is still in the balance and will continue next Saturday with the added interest of the participation of five Western Warriors who return from state duty.  Fremantle will have the services of Sean Marsh, Sean Ervine, and Brett Dorey, while Bayswater will welcome the return of skipper Marcus North, and fiery left-arm fast bowler Mathew Innes
