Although Bayswater-Morley will not be participating in the finals series of the WACA First-Grade pennant competition, they seem determined to finish the regular season with a flourish of wins.  After posting a handsome victory against Rockingham-Mandurah last week, the Bears made it back-to-back wins by convincingly beating middle of the table University in a one day match at Hillcrest on Saturday.

Batting first, Bayswater were in early trouble at 5-77, but the fine late season form of Brendan Mills continued with a patient and well structured 75 from 90 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes, steering the total to a reasonable 184 after their 50 overs.  Mills received some valuable support along the way from Matt Birrell [25], Liam Davis [15], and Sam Baird, who made 19 in a vital partnership of 63 for the sixth wicket.  Josh Mangan and Mark Penter each nabbed three wickets for the visitors.

The University pursuit was in disarray when they found themselves at 4-42 and then 6-65 before a 43 run partnership between Mike Innes and Josh Mangan gave them some hope.  But when Mangan went for 39 with the score on 7-112, the task proved beyond them and they were ultimately dismissed for 149 after exactly 46 overs.  The star with the ball for the Bears was Bryce Jeffrey who took 4-34 from his ten overs.  Other important contributors were Mike Thistle with 2-14 from seven, Matt Inness [1-7 from 7], and Grant Thistle with 1-22 from his eight.

Bayswater will travel to Lilac Hill Park for their last pennant match of the season in a two-day clash with Midland-Guildford beginning on Saturday, and will be looking for a hat-trick of wins to add some credibility to their campaign and boost their confidence for 2008-2009.
