Bayswater-Morley’s intention to conclude the regular season of WACA First-Grade pennant competition with three consecutive wins is looking decidedly healthy after the first day of their match with Midland-Guildford at Lilac Hill on Saturday. The home side batted first, and after losing the early wicket of opener Daryl Mitchell for only one, David Corcoran and Peter Worthington built a second wicket partnership of 115 before Worthington fell to Michael Thistle for 59. The platform had been built for a substantial total, but when Corcoran fell for 50 after the addition of only two further runs, the rot quickly set in.
The Midland middle and lower order could not develop any pairing of note and the last eight were all dismissed for less than twenty. The dramatic collapse was complete when they were dismissed for a disappointing 181, losing the last eight wickets for only sixty runs. The batting was poor, but the Bayswater bowlers were thoroughly deserving of their success. Mathew Inness, Michael Thistle, and James Morris shared the honours with three wickets each. Bayswater then batted for the final 24 overs of the day and, after losing skipper Marcus North without scoring, settled to their task through the efforts of Liam Davis [44 not out] and Matthew Birrell [44], and took the scoreboard on to 2-99 at the close. There is a chance that Davis will be unavailable to continue his innings next week due to the possibility of selection in the Warriors team to meet Victoria at the WACA beginning on Friday. North and Inness will certainly be missing but the rules allow for replacements for all representatives so the Bears should not be disadvantaged. So, barring a collapse similar to their hosts, Bayswater should achieve their aim of a late season hat-trick of wins.
