Bayswater-Morley have started the second half of the WACA pennant season with an emphatic win against Joondalup at Iluka at the weekend. Batting first on a wicket which was irregular and uneven, the Bears struggled to be summarily dismissed for only 160 inside two sessions. Only Chris Hall [38], skipper Marcus North [25], and Rob Peach [24] made any impression on the scoreboard. For the home team James Sprague, Anthony Botha, and Chris Thompson each took three wickets.
However, the track proved to be the culprit and coupled with another inspired spell of fast bowling from Bears quick Kim Lawrence, Joondalup were reeling at 6-92 at stumps on Saturday. Lawrence had bowled 6 overs and taken 4-11 including a hat-trick which began when Western Warrior Ryan Campbell was caught behind for 3, and was completed with the dismissals of Steve Mason and Garth Wood, both trapped LBW. On Sunday Lawrence promptly completed the rout by snaring three more victims to finish the innings with the remarkable figures of 7-16 from 8 overs as Joondalup crashed to be all out for 126. Lawrence now has 30 wickets for the season and his tally was only overshadowed by his eight wicket haul against Claremont-Nedlands earlier in the season. The morning session was also notable for the unfortunate incident of Marcus North breaking a finger when attempting a catch at slip and leaving the field for medical attention and taking no further part in the match. X-rays revealed a break which may rule him out of the Warriors upcoming fixtures against Queensland at the WACA. The Bears proceeded to bat a second time, building the lead close to 200 before compulsorily closing within six overs of stumps. Michael Thistle led the way with his second half-century [55] of the season. The end of the match saw Joondalup at 1-22, giving Kim Lawrence the opportunity to pick up his eighth wicket for the game. The Bears keep their slim finals hopes alive with the win and next week travel to Tompkins Park to tackle Melville.
