Bayswater-Morley completed a meritorious win over the highly fancied Melville at Tompkins Park on Saturday in the eleventh round of the WACA pennant competition.  The Bears were defending only 128 but had the reigning premiers teetering at 7-53 at stumps on the first day with the game still in the balance.

When the match resumed, the Melville tail grafted for a further 90 minutes, but when Michael Thistle trapped Western Warriors batsman Adam Voges leg before for 16, the innings ended at 94.  None of the potent Melville batting line-up reached 20, and the Bayswater attack continues to impress as the most penetrating in the competition.  Mathew Inness finished with 4-35, Kim Lawrence 3-49, and Thistle 3-4 from 4.4 overs.

Bayswater batted throughout the remainder of the day, gaining some valuable time in the middle which should stand them in good stead in their continuing quest for a finals berth. Opener Chris Hall was outstanding in scoring an unbeaten 96 in the total of 7-207 at the close of play.  The Bears return home to Hillcrest Reserve next Saturday to host the local derby against Mount Lawley.

Meanwhile at
Fletcher Park on Sunday, Bayswater met Perth in a quarter-final of the WACA Sunday League competition.  Batting first, the Bears compiled an impressive 5-257 from their allotted 50 overs with all of the top order making contributions. Chris Hall made 40, Michael Thistle 42, Jon McLean 69, Ryan Phillimore 42, and Brendan Mills aided with a sparkling cameo of 31 from 14 balls.  The Perth response began disastrously at 2-8 with gun batsman Luke Ronchi back in the shed.  But two fine innings from Aaron Heal [75] and Rhys May [62] guided the home team to a surprisingly easy win when they passed the target with almost four overs to spare.
